First of all, let me introduce you to three of my hens -
they like apple pie for breakfast. The other photo is my favorite place
in Baltimore to buy reclaimed wood, Second Chance.

Beautiful Creatures

I have six hens, all of whom are my inspiration for doing these chicken icons.

Style & Quality

My fascination with chickens began when my daughter hatched some chicks from eggs as a science project. I was astonished at how many of their social interactions mirrored our own. My moment of inspiration came when I was looking at a scrap book from a previous visit to Prague. I had many pictures of the religious painting and icons from that great city but I realized that I and probably most others had closer parallels in our daily lived to chickens then to those long ago religious figures. When I tried my first religious icon with a chicken instead of a person I knew I had something. Additional experimentation with more modern topics also highlighted the fact that chickens are a great vehicle for exploring the essence of many pop culture figures while at the same time being very accessable.

I also am an advocate for responsible backyard chicken raising. I think it's one of the best ways for people to learn about how chickens are as animals - and not just a piece of flesh to eat.

100% Handmade

I paint every one of the icons by hand. The icons that have assemblage pieces I have found all over the D.C. area as well as Baltimore (one of my favorite foraging spots).
